It’s been a busy couple of months, but I just wanted to let you know about a fantastic bit of kit I’ve come across that could make a huge different in audio work, such as your podcasts. It’s the TritonAudio FetHead.
My voiceover and podcast microphone of choice is the Shure SM7B, a broadcast industry standard, but it does have a rather low output. What this means in practice is that you have to crank up the gain of your pre-amp, and that can mean high levels of noise. What the FetHead does is provide 20dB or so of clean gain between the mic and the pre-amp, so that your pre-amp doesn’t have to work so hard. And the results are fantastic.
There are several versions of the FetHead, either blocking or passing phantom power, and providing filtering if needed. At a whisker over £70 it’s an amazing little product.
When you need more clean gain
