I was asked a great question this week about how to deal with unwanted reflections. They can be particularly problematic if you're filming anything against glass - perhaps alongside or inside demo cabinets at exhibitions or your own facilities.
The good news is that you can eliminate them easily and affordably with a circular polarizing filter. Check out this video to see it in action. Screw it onto your lens and then rotate the filter, and the reflections will magically disappear.
There are a couple of issues to be aware of. The first is that you're going to lose potentially a couple f-stops of light by using the filter. If the light is already on the low side, then you may need to add more or risk the image getting noisy as the camera adds gain.
The second is that any time you put additional glass in front of the lens, there is the potential to degrade the image. So try to always ensure you're using good quality filters from good names - and note that ebay is awash with fakes that will offer worse performance than having no filter at all.
But even the best are readily affordable, and I'd wager the circular polarising filter will quickly become a key part of your video tool box.
