We've covered a lot of ground over the last six months across many areas of videography, and a key areas of focus in that time has been on making better product videos. I wanted to sum up some of the key points so far, and handily I found it all in a three minute video.
So check out this video for the top ten tips on making successful product demo videos. Not everything in there for everyone, and there are key steps you'd cut out to keep costs down, but certainly issues such as alignment with branding, consistent style and image, length of the video, the importance of the script and final delivery are all aspects we've covered here before.
One interesting point raised was wardrobe, and I'd like to add to that by saying that, ideally, don't wear checked suits or anything green, and don't stand against green background. Patterns and checks can result in off-putting moire patterns in the video, whilst green is just not a particularly flattering colour.
Next week, I've got another tips video for you, this time focusing on corporate video. In the mean time, I'll leave you with a very low cost tip to protect your camera. Buy a UV filter. Back in the days of film, UV filters were essential for getting those really nice sky tones. With digital, the UV filter does next to nothing to the image, but for the price of a few designer coffees you have protection for your lens. Unless you've paid big money for your video camera, chances are the lens is not removable, so one tiny scratch on the lens and the whole camera is history. Screw in a UV filter, and if the worst happens you're looking at tens of pounds for a new filter rather than hundreds or even thousands of pounds for a new camera.
